It depends, is it for a console because then it is copyrighted software and therefore illegal to share online.

A game is a piece of work someone has created, thats in the form of a software. Because software is something that can be easily transmitted and copied, people think its ok to download for free. If you download it for free then the gamemaker doesn’t get any money for his work! Its just like illegally downloading music, except worse because these days most decent games cost upwards of $30mill to make.
If everyone pirated everything, then there would be no more game development since why would someone develop a game that would make them no money (or a loss).
It’s like stealing a patent. However as long as your illegally downloading your game for home usage (no reselling) than the charges that will go against you if your caught won’t be as bad.
Maybe that is a a free game paid for via advertising (freeware or trial software).

These companies paid good money to develop these games, and they want to make a profit. That’s like asking why it’s illegal for me to come into your house and take your TV for free, it’s not mine and I didn’t pay for it.
Same with games, if you didn’t pay for it, and you download it, it’s stealing (unless the publisher is providing it for free, which is rare).

If you are able to download it for free on the internet, who would buy it in a shop? If everyone dowloaded it for free from the internet, the company making the game would make no profit and it would be pointless for them to create another.

copyright laws is one thing.
Another is that the gaming industry don’t get any more money if people can download games for free.
